Meet Shirley - A High Mar Resident
“The best feature, other than affordable rent, is living in a building with people your own age who have had similar experiences in life,” shares Shirley, a resident at High Mar (a 55+ BHP apartment community.) “You're never alone because you make friends and spend time together in the community rooms playing cards, making puzzles, having a potluck supper, walking to the park, or just sitting and talking.”
Shirley provides a tour of High Mar and gathered some friends for an impromptu chatting session. You can see their friendships, and what it means to be able to spend time safely together outdoors now that they’re fully vaccinated for COVID. Programs and events were reduced at High Mar during COVID, but Shirley shares how much she appreciates all that’s offered at the building, like free wi-fi and fresh food delivered through Boulder Food Rescue – helping with monthly bills, and community building activites that impact how they stay connected.
While Shirley loves where she lives and appreciates the opportunities it provides for older adults, she feels even more strongly about affordable apartments being available for families. "I used to live at a different BHP apartment community, with families and kids too, who I loved being near. For families that can’t afford market-rate rent, affordable apartments can help secure a home which is so important for physical & emotional health, and social & educational development for parents and children too.”
You can see how she values her community as we tour the grounds and talk about the importance of home. She kindly shared her corner apartment with us, with the light-filled living area and kitchen as a perfect place to settle into an afternoon of quilting with her sewing machine and counter-top ironing easily at hand.
